The short version
Wind is the one hazard in this hub where the numbers in circulation genuinely disagree with each other, and where the gap between what a regulator publishes and what a rental company or a travel blog repeats is largest. This article tries to keep the two apart: what the Icelandic Met Office actually defines, what one specific engineered system actually limits, and what is convention — useful, widely repeated, but nobody's rule.
The centre of the piece is a threshold table in metres per second, built the same way, because a single figure like '20 m/s is dangerous' is not wrong so much as unattributed — it turns out to trace back to a rule the Met Office itself abolished. Around it sits the other half of the subject: what a gust actually costs a renter, which turns out to be a door rather than a windscreen, and the single add-on on the whole market that changes that answer.

Iceland measures wind in metres per second, and the figure you are quoted is rarely the one that matters
One metre per second is 3.6 kilometres per hour, 1.944 knots, and about 2.24 miles per hour — worth fixing once, since every figure in this article is quoted in it. The naming scale itself is a Beaufort-derived adaptation dating to 1903, and Veðurstofa Íslands, the Icelandic Meteorological Office, still uses it as the reference every forecast, warning and rental clause sits on top of.

This is the Met Office's own naming convention for a 10-minute average wind speed. It is not a warning trigger — the colour system in this article works on a different basis entirely.
That last point is the one most guidance glosses over. The Met Office's own explainer is direct about it: the scale is based on the average effect of wind over a 10-minute period, and the instantaneous readings most instruments now record — gusts — are often far from that mean. A commonly cited rule of thumb puts gusts at roughly 1.5 to 2 times the mean wind speed in Icelandic conditions; that ratio is not a Met Office figure, only a secondary approximation, but it explains why a forecast quoting one number and a driver's own hand on a door handle feeling another are not actually contradicting each other.
It is also worth being clear about scale before the rest of this article gets into thresholds. Iceland's highest officially recorded gusts — two competing station figures, roughly 74 m/s at Gagnheiði in 1995 and roughly 73 m/s at Hallormsstaðaháls, neither independently re-confirmed against a single current records page in this research — and the 52.7 m/s recorded at the country's windiest inhabited station, Stórhöfði on Heimaey, in the October 2009 storm that also saw 20 m/s or more at half of all lowland automatic stations nationwide, are extremes. They are not everyday driving conditions, and no source in this research treats them as such.
Winter wind is not modestly stronger than summer's — it can be five times more damaging
The Met Office's own 2013 wind-energy atlas, built from over a decade of station data, names the country's genuinely windy zones once elevation is normalised out: the exposed peninsulas of Skagi, Melrakkaslétta, Langanes and Snæfellsnes — particularly around Gufuskálar — plus the south coast of Reykjanes, the stretch between Landeyjar and Meðallandssveit, and the area around Höfn. Modelled speeds at turbine height (50–100 m, not bumper height, so useful for relative comparison rather than a literal driving figure) average 6–9 m/s in summer and 10–12 m/s in winter over intermediate terrain, falling to 3–5 m/s in sheltered valleys. Two more sources add to that pattern at ground level: glacier-drainage winds off Vatnajökull's south-facing slopes near Öræfi can reach 6 m/s even on an otherwise calm day, and a sea-breeze effect on calm, sunny days can independently push coastal wind to 10 m/s.
One figure explains why winter risk outruns what a simple average suggests. Because wind's destructive force scales with the cube of its speed, wind power density in an Icelandic winter runs 2 to 5.5 times higher than in summer, even though the mean speed itself only rises by a factor of roughly 1.2 to 1.8. A winter that looks '50% windier' on paper can be several times more damaging in practice.
Summer is not reliably the calm season either, which the Met Office's own year-end reviews make explicit rather than implicit. Its account of 2024 flags June to August as unusually windy for a summer, even as the year's overall average sat near the 1991–2020 norm. 2025 ran calmer overall — the national average sat 0.5 m/s below the long-term norm — but still produced the year's headline event, a southerly gale on 5–6 February 2025 the agency itself called among the most severe in recent years, with significant damage in Stöðvarfjörður in the East Fjords.

It sits here because the windiest months on the Met Office's own figures are also, on our own figures, the cheapest and least crowded months to book into; the correlation is a booking fact, not a safety one.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office and the Road Administration publish no wind-speed limit for driving any vehicle. Every campervan-specific figure above other than the ferry limit is a rental company's or a travel guide's own convention, repeated widely enough to read as official.
The clause that does not check out
Several independent travel guides repeat a claim that one specific rental company voids its insurance if a renter drives at or above 15 m/s while an official weather warning is active. It could not be traced to a live document from that company in this research, and a direct read of that company's own Iceland General Terms and Conditions, valid from 11 March 2026, contains no such figure. Why a boxy van behaves differently from a car in the same wind
A campervan presents a tall, flat wall to a crosswind and carries proportionally little weight low down to resist it, which is the whole reason it behaves differently from a car in the same gust. That is not a theoretical concern in Iceland. On 6 May 2016 a camper van was filmed being blown off the road and overturned near Kjalarnes, about half an hour from Reykjavík, on open, low-lying ground; the driver emerged largely unhurt. In September 2018 an RV was blown off the road on Borgarfjarðarbraut in West Iceland in gusts reported at 40 m/s, with four occupants unharmed. On 13 July 2026, a pickup towing a caravan on Holtavörðuheiði — an exposed pass on the Ring Road — was caught by wind reported at up to 27 m/s sustained with gusts to 33 m/s; the caravan overturned and came to rest across the road.
Those three incidents did not happen on the south coast, which most wind advice defaults to. Kjalarnes is flat lowland, Borgarfjarðarbraut is open west-country road, and Holtavörðuheiði is a mountain pass in the opposite direction — which matches the Met Office's own regional data naming Skagi, Melrakkaslétta, Langanes and Snæfellsnes as comparably windy to the south coast. The hazard is any exposed, flat or elevated stretch that takes a full-width crosswind, not a single region.
No Icelandic regulator publishes a specific wind speed at which a van of a given weight will roll, and this research found no basis for stating one — treat any blog claim that gives a precise rollover threshold as unsourced. What the Met Office's own modelling does confirm is that 20 m/s and above is 'not uncommon' in many parts of the country in winter, which places the wind speeds behind the documented incidents above well inside normal winter range rather than at some exotic extreme.
Roof-top tents add a second, distinct exposure once the van is parked rather than moving. Hard-shell tents are marketed as meaningfully more wind-resistant than soft canvas ones, and the standard advice is to park nose-into-the-wind so the tent's more aerodynamic front takes the load rather than its broad side. Awnings get thinner, less specific guidance — simply that they can rip in exposed conditions — and no vendor-specific awning clause turned up in this research.

Category is a rough, imperfect proxy for the height and side area that make a van more or less exposed to crosswind — it is a price band, not a wind-safety rating, and tall and low vans both sit inside the same categories.
The bill: a parked door caught by a gust
A parked van's door, once caught by a gust, acts like a sail on a hinge with enormous leverage. It either swings past its natural stop and bends the hinge or the door stopper, or it is wrenched out of a hand reaching for it and slams into whatever is nearby. Rental companies' own guidance describes exactly this failure mode, and independently converges on the same point: it is not the most dramatic wind damage in Iceland, but it is by a wide margin the most common insurance claim tied to wind in the country's camper industry.
Cost figures are harder to pin to a single number. A documented forum account describes a Blue Car Rental customer charged 350,000 ISK for wind damage to a front door — despite holding several layers of purchased cover, none of which applied, because the rental agreement specifically carved out wind-caught-door damage as the renter's responsibility. That is one detailed, first-hand account rather than an audited statistic, but the clause it describes matches, close to word for word, what several Icelandic camper companies' own published terms say independently of each other.

This is not one company being stingy
Every vendor checked reaches close to the same exclusion in close to the same wording — damage from wind catching a door, excluded even at a zero-excess tier. That consistency, across companies that otherwise compete hard on price and cover, points to an underwriting decision rather than a marketing one: Cozy Campers names VÍS, Iceland's largest insurer, as the underwriter behind its own policies, and it is a reasonable guess that the same insurer or its peers price this risk the same way for everyone. Shopping around for a company that simply covers it does not work, per the terms checked on 17 August 2026 — Kuku Campers' priced add-on is the only clear exception found.
PK Campers' terms exclude one more thing worth knowing before anyone gets near the roof: roof damage, worded specifically around renters climbing on the vehicle to take photos. It is not a wind clause, but it is a reminder that a parked van's most expensive moments are rarely about the driving at all.
The five cheapest companies for a winter pickup by median daily rate, with the equipment tier and cancellation terms attached. In a season where a storm can cost you a day, the cancellation column is worth as much as the price column.
Cheapest winter vendors matched against their equipment tier and cancellation policy, from our own price and policy data — not a wind-coverage comparison. None of the fields in this strip say anything about wind-door cover one way or the other, which is exactly the point: cancellation flexibility and equipment tier vary company to company, but the exclusion above does not.
The parking-and-door routine that actually prevents it
Hold the door with both hands, from the first inch
Get a hand on the door before it can catch the wind, not after. Kuku Campers' own guidance singles out the south coast as where the habit matters most, because the gusts there hit harder.
Never leave a door open and unattended
Not even for a few seconds to reach something from the back. An unattended door in a gust is exactly the failure mode every vendor's terms exclude.
Open only as far as you need, and control the whole arc
A door swung past its natural stop is what bends the hinge or the door stopper. Slow, deliberate, partial openings avoid that regardless of gust strength.
Put your own body between the wind and the door
Step out so you physically block the door's swing. It is the one piece of advice repeated by every source checked, and it costs nothing to practise before it matters.
Ask which wind and sand/ash add-ons a company sells before you fly
Coverage varies sharply by vendor and by tier, and the cheapest quote is not always the one carrying the fewest exclusions.
Price the add-on against the deposit it replaces
A daily charge for the whole trip should be weighed against the excess it stands in for, not against the odds of one bad afternoon.

Your van has a roof-top tent and wind is building overnight

Your regular door is on one side and there is a steady crosswind
orient the van so that door sits on the leeward side, away from the wind, even if that means the van is not pointed into it. The two pieces of advice can conflict, and no single blanket rule covers a roof-tent van and a side-door van at once.
You cannot tell which way the wind will be blowing by the time you plan to leave
default to protecting the door over protecting the tent. A caught door is the far more common, and far cheaper to avoid, of the two failure modes.
You are stopping for five minutes at a viewpoint or a filling station, not overnighting
apply the same routine anyway. Most of the documented door damage in this research happened at day stops, not overnight pitches, because nobody thinks to park deliberately for a short errand.
- No source in this research gives a single 'always park like this' rule, and stating one here would misrepresent a genuine conflict between two pieces of good advice.
Wind adds a second, separate risk once you are out of the van on foot, and the Met Office publishes two worked examples rather than a simple rule of thumb: −10°C air temperature with a 15 m/s wind produces a wind chill of −22°C, and −25°C with an 11 m/s (40 km/h) wind produces −41°C, a chill at which the agency's own guidance states skin can suffer frostbite in under ten minutes. Its full numeric grid exists only as an image on vedur.is and could not be transcribed value by value for this article — treat the two figures above as anchors and add a margin rather than interpolate between them. The agency's own caveat is worth carrying too: the table models heat loss from exposed skin and does not capture how much heat cold, dry air pulls out of the lungs alone, which a face covering only partly offsets.
A parked van rocking in the wind overnight is normal, not a fault, and it is common on exposed stretches of Route 1 in particular. Some of the more sheltered pitches cluster around fjord and cliff-backed towns — Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Skaftafell in the south; Egilsstaðir and Seyðisfjörður in the east; Akureyri in the north — though this is practical, word-of-mouth knowledge rather than a published safety list, and no official 'storm shelter' directory for campsites exists.
The other bill: a sandblasted windscreen, and a policy that can lapse before it pays
The hazard sits on Iceland's glacial outwash plains, the flat, vegetation-free '-sandur' deltas along the south coast: Mýrdalssandur below Katla, Skeiðarársandur below Vatnajökull's southern margin near Öræfi, and the Landeyjar and Dyrhólaey stretches around Vík. With no windbreak across kilometres of loose glacial silt, a strong gust on a dry day can loft enough material to sandblast a vehicle crossing the plain within minutes.
The damage is airborne abrasion rather than a discrete strike, and it is a different peril from Gravel Protection, which covers a stone thrown up by a passing vehicle. Vendor descriptions of what it hits converge on paint and bodywork, windows and the windscreen, and headlight and taillight lenses, with Kuku Campers' own wording extending it to plastics, chrome and wheels.

Buying the cover does not always protect you
Blue Car Rental's own terms for Sand and Ash Protection state the cover applies only when driving under safe weather conditions, and must be added before the rental begins rather than after a strike. It is a car-rental company rather than one of the camper vendors this site compares, but the clause illustrates a pattern found across nearly every weather-related product in this research: paying for cover does not survive driving into conditions the insurer would call reckless, whether that cover is for a wind-caught door, a sand-blasted windscreen, or the underlying damage waiver itself.
The ash risk here is overwhelmingly historic tephra being re-mobilised by wind, not fresh ashfall from a live eruption. Katla, the volcano under Mýrdalsjökull whose past eruptions supplied much of Mýrdalssandur's dust, has not erupted since 1918. Reykjanes peninsula's fissure eruptions since 2021 have been effusive, producing lava rather than an ash cloud, unlike Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 or Grímsvötn in 2011; the Met Office's most recent published update, from 21 July 2026, describes the area as being in a quiescent uplift and magma-accumulation phase beneath Svartsengi, with no active eruption. Check the Met Office's own volcanic activity pages before travelling if that status matters to your dates — it has changed before and will again.
The Met Office's four colours, and the fixed number they replaced
Before 1 November 2017, Iceland's weather warnings used fixed numeric thresholds — 20 m/s wind, or 100 mm of rain in 24 hours. The Met Office deliberately abolished that system in favour of an impact-based, four-colour scale (green, yellow, orange, red), stating that fixed thresholds now give way to criteria that take account of the season and the circumstances of each individual case. There is no longer a single m/s figure that converts to a colour; the same wind speed can sit under yellow in one region or season and orange in another.
Yellow is the lowest active tier: the agency's own wording covers both limited societal impact despite a high-probability forecast, and — separately — a small-to-moderate probability of very high-impact weather three to five days out. That second case matters for trip planning: an early yellow is not necessarily a mild-weather signal, it can mean the Met Office simply is not confident yet about something more severe, and it can firm up into orange or red as the date nears. Red is the highest tier and, in the agency's own words, signals major societal impact from the weather. This research did not find the Met Office's own one-line definition of orange; secondary characterisations describe it as dangerous weather where unnecessary travel is discouraged, sitting between the two — treat that as a reasonable gloss rather than a quoted official definition.
Colour is set by expert assessment plotted on what the agency calls an impact matrix — probability against expected impact — using the international Common Alerting Protocol, which lines Iceland's colours up with the pan-European meteoalarm.eu convention. Warnings can be issued up to five days ahead: nationwide at three to five days out, narrowing to specific forecast regions at one to two days. A second colour scale exists, and it is not this one
The Met Office's live wind-speed map uses its own colour key — roughly green, blue, purple and red across rising speed bands — to show current conditions, entirely separate from the yellow-orange-red warning system above. This research could not confirm the map's exact bands against a live legend, so treat the distinction as the point rather than the specific colours: a wind map showing purple is not the same statement as a warning showing orange, and conflating the two is an easy, common misreading.

Where wind physically stops you: a ferry, and mostly not a tunnel
The clearest wind closure in the whole system belongs to a ferry, not a road.
