Northern Lights Photography from a Campervan

Every guide gives you the same twenty seconds at ISO 1600, and it is the right answer on one of the three kinds of night you might get. The rest of what costs you the picture on an Icelandic winter night is wind in the tripod legs, cold in the battery, frost on the front element on exactly the clear nights you drove out for, and the fog that blooms across the glass the moment you climb back into a warm van.

The short version

Aurora exposure is set by how fast the display is moving, not by how dark the night is. A faint arc wants ten to twenty seconds and a substorm breaking up overhead wants one, because the sensor integrates everything that crosses the frame while the shutter is open. Get that right and a modest camera on a firm tripod makes a photograph. Get it wrong and an expensive one makes green soup.

The rest of this page is cold-weather logistics, which is where Icelandic nights are actually lost. A gust you barely register buffets the tripod for one second of a long frame. Cold takes a large share of a battery's capacity away and hands it back once the cell warms. Ice forms on the front element with nobody touching it. None of these announce themselves; they show up as a frame that looked fine on the rear screen and is soft at home.

A campervan changes all of them. It is a windbreak, a battery, a light source, and the reason you can wait two hours for a substorm instead of driving back at 22:30. Each of those also has a way of ruining the night: the lee side of a van stops being a lee side the moment the wind veers, one dome light costs everyone on the campsite half an hour of dark adaptation, and the warm cabin that revives a dead battery is the one place a cold camera cannot simply be carried into.

If you take one thing from this page, take the habit in the frost section below: what you do with the camera in the cold, before the van door opens, is what decides whether it fogs inside. If you take two, add the checking habit in the focusing section, because the rear screen is not where a soft frame shows itself.


Three exposures, and the one everybody gets backwards

Three kinds of display, three different exposures, and the published starting point only fits one of them.

Every guide's starting point — manual, aperture wide open, manual focus on a star, a long shutter — assumes a display that is barely moving, and it stops being right the moment anything happens, because the sensor integrates. A curtain crossing thirty degrees of sky in eight seconds is smeared across all thirty in an eight-second frame, so the rays and folds you stood there watching are averaged out of existence. CaptureLandscapes put it bluntly: beyond about fifteen seconds on a moving display you risk blurring the aurora into a washed-out smear. The frame comes back brighter, smoother and emptier at once, which on a small screen reads as the better picture.

The second reason to come down bites earlier than people expect: a bright corona blows the green channel long before the landscape is exposed, which Capture the Atlas flag as very common once activity rises. We found no source that states the next part, so treat it as reasoning rather than a measurement — the clipping is almost always green-channel only, so a luminance histogram can look comfortable while green is already at the wall. Use the RGB histogram and turn the highlight alert on.

Collated from SpaceWeatherLive, Capture the Atlas, BBC Sky at Night Magazine and Serena Dzenis's guide for Iceland Photo Tours, all read August 2026. They disagree by up to a stop and a half at the faint end, which is a real choice between noise and star trailing rather than an error by any of them. These are full-frame numbers: on a crop sensor cap ISO around 6400 and expect roughly a stop more noise.

The ceiling on a faint-night exposure is star trailing. The 500 rule — seconds equal 500 divided by the focal length multiplied by the crop factor — was built for film and is generous on a modern sensor. The NPF rule, devised by Frédéric Michaud for the Société Astronomique du Havre, is the arithmetic version: 35 times the f-number plus 30 times the pixel pitch in microns, divided by focal length, and it ignores crop factor deliberately because pixel pitch already contains it. National Parks at Night's worked comparison on an Irix 15 mm and a 24.5 MP Nikon Z 6 gives 26.6 seconds by the older 400 rule, 17.3 by NPF and 8.6 in NPF's stricter accurate mode — a spread wider than most people's margin for error, and the reason to test your own rig rather than trust a rule.

The rule only binds on some nights. On an active display you are already at one to five seconds, so the aurora's motion is the constraint and the star rule never enters it. It bites on a faint static arc — precisely the night you wanted twenty seconds. Going wide buys room: on a 24 MP full-frame body the simple NPF figure at f/2.8 lands near twenty seconds at 14 mm and under twelve at 24 mm. Shoot RAW either way.


Wind, which ruins more frames than cold ever will

The wind that moves a tripod is nothing like the wind you notice, and the frame it spoils looks fine until you magnify it.

The wind number you want does not exist. The most systematic tripod testing we found, The Center Column's torque measurements, reports that at 6 mph "basically any tripod will provide the necessary amount of stiffness", and says outright that measuring the wind speed at which visible blur begins is work they have not done. So the threshold is unknown, and the evidence for the damage is photographic rather than numerical — oblong stars in frames taken on nights nobody thought were windy. What wind does is not simply push. A tripod is a resonant structure, and what resonates is the raised centre column and the thinnest leg sections, both of which the checklist below deals with. On materials the honest summary is shorter than the marketing: carbon legs are far more comfortable to adjust bare-handed below freezing than aluminium, which conducts heat out of your fingers — a claim that comes from tripod manufacturers, though the physics is not in doubt — and hands are the real limit on how long you stay out. Mass is what resists wind, though, and a light carbon travel tripod needs the ballast it was bought to avoid carrying. We found no measured comparison of damping at sub-zero temperature, so do not believe anyone who says carbon damps better because it is cold. A heavy tripod set low beats a light one set high.

  • Centre column down, and the whole tripod low

    The column is the weakest part of the structure and raising it turns the rig into a lever for every gust. Collapse the thin lower leg sections before the thick upper ones, keeping legs of similar diameter matched. A low camera is the better aurora composition anyway, since it puts more foreground under more sky.

  • Push the feet in, and hold it down

    Into packed sand, gravel or snow rather than onto it. A hand pressed on the head through the exposure is worth more than most accessories and costs nothing.

  • Never touch the camera during the exposure

    Two-second self-timer as standard, five in wind, or a remote release if you have one — BBC Sky at Night list a release cable or timer as basic kit, and the hand that presses the button is the vibration you can remove for nothing. Image stabilisation is the one place the guides split: Iceland Photo Tours say to turn it on when wind is shaking the tripod, where most manufacturers say to switch it off for tripod work. Test yours, because on a still night it costs you sharpness and on a windy one it may save the frame.

  • Deal with the strap

    Take it off, or lash it to a leg with a rubber band or zip tie. A strap beating in 15 m/s is a metronome attached to your camera, and it will not show up as anything you can diagnose later.

  • Weight it, but never let the weight swing

    Guides disagree and both sides are right in their own conditions: hanging a bag from the centre column adds useful mass, while in gusty or shifting wind a free-hanging bag acts as a pendulum and can add torsional movement of its own. Both agree the ballast must not move — set it so it just drags on the ground, or strap it low to a leg.

  • Use the van as the windbreak, and know when it stops being one

    A high-sided camper is a far better wind shadow than a car, and it is already parked where you are sleeping. It works only while the wind holds direction: a veering gust drops you into the turbulent eddy behind the van, which is worse than the open. Park nose into the wind — the same choice our heating article recommends for the night's sleep.

  • Read the wind forecast, not only the cloud

    The aurora page tells you about the sky; the wind field on vedur.is tells you whether you will get a sharp frame out of it, and whether the drive to the stand is sensible at all. Our winter article carries the thresholds at which a high-sided van becomes difficult.

A gust does not look like a mistake

A ten-second frame that took a one-second buffet comes back with slightly oval stars and a slightly soft landscape, and on a three-inch screen at fit-to-view it is indistinguishable from a good frame. National Parks at Night's field test is the calibration: on a 42 MP body their stars were becoming oblong at 20 seconds and only round at six — a shutter change bought partly by opening from f/4 to f/2.8 and partly by ISO 25,600, and a difference nobody sees without magnifying. On a windy night, shoot several short frames rather than one long one, so a gust costs you one frame in five instead of the only frame you took.


Focusing in the dark

Autofocus will not do this, the infinity mark is not where the engraving says, and the whole thing moves as the lens gets cold.

Autofocus fails for a reason easy to state and hard to work around: a second-magnitude star at f/2.8 is too small and too dim for most autofocus modules, and a green curtain has almost no edge contrast anywhere in it. Bodies rated to −6 EV will sometimes lock onto a bright star or a planet — test yours in a car park, not at the stand.

The infinity mark is the other trap. Modern autofocus lenses focus past infinity, with no hard stop, and true sharpness sits slightly before or after the engraving depending on tolerances and temperature. Temperature is the Iceland-specific half: a lens carried from a +20°C cabin into a −8°C night contracts as it cools, and photographers shooting through a session report frames slowly going soft. BBC Sky at Night's advice is to find where infinity actually is on your lens by testing outside at night, because it may not be where the manufacturer indicates.

  • Pre-focus in daylight and mark the barrel

    Set infinity on a distant mountain at maximum live-view magnification while you can still see, and mark the ring with tape. This is folklore rather than a technique anyone publishes with a date, and it is a starting point rather than an answer: by the time you use the mark the barrel is at a different temperature.

  • Live view, maximum magnification, the brightest thing in the sky

    Ten times if the body offers it. A bright star, a planet or a distant farm light all work; the aurora does not, because it has no edges to judge — the same reason the autofocus cannot see it.

  • Rack past sharp in both directions

    Bracket the point from either side and settle where the star is smallest. Stopping at the first position that looks acceptable is how people end up a fraction past infinity with a night of nearly-sharp frames.

  • Tape the ring — then check that taping it does anything

    Gaffer tape stiffens in cold and can leave residue; painter's tape peels in wind. On a focus-by-wire mirrorless lens, taping achieves nothing at all, because the focus position is not held mechanically — a caveat that follows from how those lenses work rather than from any guide we found. On those, set manual focus and never touch the mode switch.

  • Check the first frame at 100%, and redo it when the temperature moves

    Not fit-to-screen. Coming out of a heated cabin, an hour into a −10°C stand, or after a lens swap, check it again.


Cold, and the battery that quits before the display does

The nights with the best forecast are the coldest nights, for exactly the same reason they are clear.

Start with what you will be standing in. The mean of each January's coldest single night, computed from the Icelandic Met Office's monthly station files for 1991–2020, is −9.4°C at Reykjavík, −8.3°C at Keflavík, −12.5°C at Akureyri, −19.3°C at Grímsstaðir á Fjöllum and −19.1°C at Mývatn, which has −26.2°C somewhere in its window. Mývatn's January series ends in 2010, so that station is a 1991–2010 average against the others' full thirty years, and likely a shade colder than the same site would read today. The link between clear and cold is not a coincidence: it is the same radiative loss that ices the front element, below.

The camera is less fragile than the forums suggest. Manufacturers publish operating ranges, not damage thresholds — Canon's support pages give 0–40°C and Nikon's professional bodies the same — and that is the range within which behaviour is guaranteed, not the point at which something breaks. What does visibly degrade is the LCD: ghosting, slower response, and industry figures putting controller processing about a quarter slower at −20°C, which matters because the rear screen is what you judge focus on.

Figures are for lithium-ion cells in general, not for any particular camera battery. Battery University is the primary source and publishes only the −18/−20°C numbers; the 0°C and −10°C figures come from vendor and industry blogs and are weaker. Frame counts are scaled from a CIPA-style rating, which assumes the rear screen is mostly off — aurora work will do worse than the arithmetic suggests.

The practical shape is three or four batteries with all but one in an inside pocket, rotated rather than run flat; Nikon's cold-weather guidance says the same, keep spares inside your coat. When the camera declares a battery dead at −12°C it is not passing a verdict on the battery — the cold has raised internal resistance until the terminal voltage sags below the cut-off, and the charge is still in there.

The rule people break is charging. Battery University BU-410 is blunt: no charge permitted below freezing, because charging a sub-freezing lithium cell plates metallic lithium onto the anode and permanently degrades performance and safety. That is the same physics our winter article states for the van's own lithium bank, and the natural move at one in the morning — plugging in the battery you just took out of a camera at −10°C — is precisely the wrong one. Let it reach cabin temperature first. Power banks are the same chemistry and the same numbers, roughly 30% down at freezing and half at −20°C, with most good ones refusing to charge cold at all; let one acclimatise for thirty to forty-five minutes before expecting anything of it.


Frost on the glass, and the trap on the way back in

Two different water problems, one on the glass outside and one inside the barrel, and only the second costs money.
Radiative cooling
The front element radiates heat to the open sky, which is far colder than the air, so the glass ends up colder than the air around it. A clear sky is the cold sink — which is why it happens on clear nights, stops under cloud, and is the aurora photographer's problem specifically.
Dew point
The temperature at which the air touching the lens gives up its water. Once the glass falls below it, moisture condenses out. Nothing to do with rain, and it happens on nights that feel bone dry.
Frost, not dew
Below 0°C the water deposits as ice crystals rather than droplets. Frost does not wipe off cleanly: wiping smears it and drags whatever grit it has collected across a coated front element.
Cold soak
Thermal mass. A body and a large lens hold their cold for a long time, so the precautions you take at the door still apply half an hour later.
Internal condensation
Water forming inside the lens barrel and on the sensor stack, where no cloth reaches. This is the failure that costs money, and it is caused by warming a cold camera in humid air rather than by the cold itself.

A lens hood is the cheapest fix and does two jobs — it blocks cold air flowing across the glass and it narrows the lens's view of the open sky, which is the path the heat leaves by. Next are air-activated hand warmers rubber-banded to the barrel or hood, which astronomy and photography writers report as effective, with a caution: heat output is inconsistent pack to pack, and a burst pack leaking into a lens barrel is a worse night than a frosted one. Above that sits a dew-heater strip, a neoprene band with a heating element, sold in USB form for lenses and 12 V for telescopes. No manufacturer we could find publishes a wattage for the camera versions, so budget power generously rather than precisely. Then two free habits: never breathe on the glass, and put the cap back on during a lull.

The trap is the van, and no photography guide addresses it, because the corpus is written for people going back to a hotel. Nikon's rule is to put the camera in a bag, zip it shut and let it warm gradually, because if it warms too quickly it will fog; if it fogs anyway, take the battery and card out and leave the compartments open until it clears, which is common practice rather than Nikon's own instruction. The reason a camper is harsher than a hotel room is not that it is warmer; it is that it is warm and close to saturated. Our heating article covers what two sleeping adults, a running heater and a set of drying gloves do to the humidity of a cabin of a few cubic metres, and the consequence for a −8°C camera is that it fogs instantly and internally rather than slowly and on the outside. In a dry hotel room you have margin. In a van on night four, with everyone's kit hung up to dry, you have none.

One consolation, with a condition attached. The reverse trip is harmless provided the camera is dry: warm glass carried into cold air sits above the outside dew point and does not condense. A camera that has spent the evening in that humid cabin is a different case — it goes out carrying water, and the water freezes on it. Which is the argument for the simplest routine of all: if you are going out again in two hours, do not bring the camera in at all. Leave it in the cab and take only the battery inside to warm.

Bag the camera outside, before the door opens

The routine that saves it takes ten seconds and nearly everyone shortcuts it. Seal camera and lens into a ziplock or dry bag while you are still standing in the cold, squeeze the air out, and only then open the van door. Leave it sealed for at least thirty to sixty minutes — longer for a big lens, which holds more cold — and if the outside of the bag is wet when you open it, the bag did the job instead of your sensor. Doing it in the doorway is not the same thing: the water that condenses is the water in the air you trapped, so the point is to trap cold, dry air.


The van: its lights, its power, and the two-hour wait

Which sockets are live with the key out, what a torch costs the people around you, and what the van itself does to a frame.

Cones adapt in five to seven minutes and are no use, because a faint aurora sits below the level at which they fire. The work is done by the rods, and by the pigment inside them, rhodopsin, which bright light bleaches instantly — and there is no way to give the recovery back, not to yourself and not to anyone else who saw it. Red is the exception, because rhodopsin is relatively insensitive to red wavelengths, while white, blue and green all bleach it aggressively. That is the whole of campsite etiquette in one sentence. Published aurora etiquette adds two rules worth keeping: never point a torch at another person, including a red one, and announce yourself as you approach people in the dark.

The van is also the foreground

The camper parked side-on with its interior dimly lit gives an aurora frame what an empty moor cannot: a legible, human-scale object with warm colour in it against the green, and a reason for your own light to be in the picture on purpose rather than by accident. Light it from inside with a head torch on low, never the dome light, and take the frame early and quickly — a lit van sits in everyone else's exposure too, so keep it out of other people's sight lines on a busy stand. The tungsten or LED cast will fight whatever white balance the aurora wants, a mixture to resolve in processing rather than in the field.

Power in a rental camper divides in two, and the division decides your night. CampEasy's FAQ describes a rear charging station with two USB ports, a 12 V socket and a voltage gauge for reading the bank, plus a 12 V socket and usually USB in front — but it does not say whether either is live with the engine off. Happy Campers' FAQ describes the split — front USB while the engine runs, rear USB at any time — though their page would not load for us, so that is indexed text rather than a quotation we verified. Which sockets stay live with the key out varies by vehicle and by conversion, so check yours in daylight on day one rather than at one in the morning with a flat battery.

The trade-off is in CampEasy's own words: all usage of the charging station will slightly reduce the usage time of the heating system until you next start the engine. Four camera batteries charged overnight are heat you do not have at five in the morning. So charge while driving, when the alternator is paying, and charge everything to full on a powered pitch, where electricity runs about 1,000–1,500 ISK a night — roughly €7–11 — and the ordinary chargers from home work. Bring a second charger before a fourth battery, because the bottleneck is charging time rather than capacity. If you rent an inverter, note the envelope one Icelandic rental company's help desk gives for its own — engine running, one device, nothing over 300 W — though that article would not load for us either, so again we are reading indexed text. A camera charger draws ten to thirty watts and sits well inside it.

A quiet hour is the normal shape of an aurora night rather than the end of it, and the timing of that belongs to our forecast article. The equipment answer is this: a van you can sit in warm with the engine off turns a two-hour lull into a wait, and a van whose heat only works on a powered pitch turns the same two hours into a decision about whether to drive home.

Counted across every camper we have catalogued from these companies' booking engines. A vendor's own listing usually says only “heater”, which is why these four states are separated here.

Each heating state above is one machine a vendor's listing calls a heater. For a night of photography the consequence is direct: hookup-only heat means the van is cold while you shoot unless you are parked on a live powered pitch, and none means the only heat on the stand is what you are wearing. It is not a comfort rating — no Icelandic company publishes a tested cabin temperature.


Grey to your eyes, green on a phone screen

Almost every disappointment reported about the northern lights is a fact about human vision rather than a fact about the aurora — and the same fact is why the phone in your pocket is a usable aurora camera.

Darren Baskill, who lectures in physics and astronomy at the University of Sussex, gives the mechanism in a paragraph: cone cells are sensitive to colour but need plenty of light, while rods are sensitive to low light but cannot distinguish colour at all. In darkness the rods take over, so a faint aurora reads grey — and a camera, in his words, collects light for longer, recording colours the rods cannot detect. Slate's account of one of the best displays in five hundred years put the naked-eye view at a slowly moving green-grey smudge, only there was a great deal more of it than usual (Slate, October 2024).

A phone screen showing vivid green under a modest display is not lying about the aurora being there: it is telling the truth about photons and a lie about the experience, and it is worth knowing that before the trip rather than at the stand. Understood that way it becomes a tool — point a phone at a grey patch of sky, take a four-second frame, and you will know whether there is an aurora in it several minutes before your eyes will.

All read August 2026. What none of it changes: no phone freezes a fast corona, because every phone's low-light strategy is to stack for longer, which is the opposite of what a corona needs. A clamp putting the phone on a real tripod — the cheapest item on this page — is the highest-value accessory here.


What to shoot it with, and what to put in the door pocket

The equipment that decides this is not the sensor. It is the aperture, the tripod, and the two batteries in your inside pocket.
  1. You have a phone and nothing else

    You are better equipped than you think, and the constraint is not the phone but whether it is still. Buy a clamp that fits a tripod, use the modes in the table above, and accept that a fast corona is beyond all of them.

  2. You have a camera and the kit zoom it came with

    Use it at its widest end, where an 18–55 is f/3.5; at 55 mm it is f/5.6, another stop and a third down. An f/3.5 lens passes roughly a quarter of the light of an f/1.8 one, so you are limited to faint, slow displays at ten to twenty seconds. That is most Icelandic nights, and it is a real photograph — the corona is the part you will miss.

  3. You own one fast wide lens

    Use it wide open and take every filter off, including the UV one — Iceland Photo Tours are explicit about that, and a cheap UV filter is the classic source of concentric ghost rings around a bright aurora. Then spend your attention on the tripod rather than the settings, because at that point the tripod is the weakest part of the system.

  4. You would rather rent glass in Reykjavík than carry it

    Beco, on Langholtsvegur, publish per-24-hour prices: 12,900 ISK for a Canon EF 14 mm f/2.8L II, 5,900 ISK for the 24 mm f/1.4L II and 7,900 ISK for a 16–35 mm f/4L — about €90, €41 and €55. Two caveats: the list is Canon EF, DSLR-era glass needing an adapter on a mirrorless body, and the page says nothing about a deposit or a minimum period. Opening hours are on a separate page, and nothing on the site suggests an out-of-hours collection for a 22:00 departure.

  5. You are buying one lens for this trip

    12–24 mm on full frame, 8–16 mm on APS-C, at f/2.8 or faster, and buy aperture before sensor: APS-C gives up about 1.2 stops of light-gathering area to full frame and Micro Four Thirds about 1.9, which is one to two stops of noise rather than a different hobby. The ladder runs from a Samyang AF 14 mm f/2.8 at around €500, through the Viltrox AF 16 mm f/1.8 at $464–550, to the purpose-built Sigma 14 mm f/1.4 — which Sigma launched as the DG DN Art in 2023 at $1,599 and has now discontinued, listing the 14 mm F1.4 DG Art as its replacement at as low as $1,839, special order only, on Sigma's own site in August 2026.

  6. Gear prices carry the date of the report they come from: the Samyang and Viltrox figures are launch-era pricing from 2023 reviews and both have moved, while the Sigma listing, the Reykjavík rental prices and the ISK conversion — the ECB reference rate of 142.6 ISK to the euro, 7 August 2026 — were read in August 2026.
  • Three or four batteries, and a second charger

    All but one in an inside pocket.

  • A ziplock or dry bag that fits camera and lens together

    In a coat pocket rather than in the boot.

  • Hand warmers and a couple of rubber bands

    One for the lens, two for your gloves.

  • A head torch that starts in red

    Not one that cycles through white to reach it.

  • Gaffer tape with a strip already cut, and a dry microfibre cloth

    Tape for a flapping strap and for the tripod clamp you would otherwise fight with bare fingers at −10°C; cut it warm. The cloth is for the eyepiece, the screen and your glasses more than the front element. Bring more memory than you expect to need, too: a night that turns good is ten to twenty-five gigabytes of RAW.

  • A remote release or intervalometer

    Or the self-timer already in the camera, which costs nothing and does the same job. The intervalometer earns its space only if you intend to leave a time-lapse running.

  • A van whose heat works with the engine off

    The only item on this list you cannot buy at ten at night.

  • Tonight's cloud and activity, read before you commit to a stand

    Two forecasts with different lead times, and the one that decides your night is the cloud.

  • A stand you chose in daylight

    Horizon, local lighting, legality and somewhere to retreat to when the cloud wins, all judged while you can see them.

  • Dates with enough darkness to be worth the drive

    Hours of real darkness per night vary across the season by a factor of three, and it is the one term you choose before you book.

  • Enough nights that one of them is clear

    Consecutive nights in one place are nothing like independent draws, which our month-by-month page measures. A route that can move between weather systems is the answer, and that is what this itinerary is built around.

  • The last five are not kit, and they are the five that actually decide whether the night works.

Be honest about the images that set your expectations, because they decide what you will be satisfied with. The photographer Lee Petersen, writing on honesty in aurora photography, points out that pictures showing a bright landscape under a bright aurora are almost always either very long exposures or composites — and names the dishonest version, in which long landscape frames are blended with sky frames sometimes not taken in the same place and the result presented as what the photographer saw. What most people actually see, in his description, is a dim band on the horizon; the bright overhead ribbons with pink in them last seconds to minutes in a whole night. Baskill offers a test for a fake: be suspicious of a starry sky above a major city, because that much light pollution would have erased the stars.

Honest processing is not no processing. Petersen's own method for colour is to push saturation temporarily to +100, set white balance and tint until no colour dominates the neutral areas, then return saturation to normal — and to work in HSL rather than the global slider, desaturating the greens where the sensor recorded them more strongly than any eye would have seen them. AI denoise is what makes an ISO 6400 file printable, with two traps: it resets colour-noise reduction, and applied heavily it erases the fine ray structure that was the entire reason you shot short.

Two positions to carry into the field, then. When a corona breaks out directly overhead there is no horizon composition left to save, and the right move is to stop working and look up — that is the one part of the night no file will hold. And the picture worth having is the one you could show to the person who was standing next to you.


Frequently asked questions

Will a full moon ruin my northern lights photographs?

No, and for photography it often helps. The moon has no effect on the aurora itself; what it washes out is the faintest displays. Aurora Reykjavík split the advice by purpose — avoid moonlight to see a weak aurora by eye, welcome it for a photograph, since it lights the foreground and shortens the exposure. That is the whole photographic case: moonlight is the one light in the landscape you neither have to carry nor declare in the caption, and it costs you only the arcs that were marginal anyway. Can you photograph the northern lights with a phone?

Yes, and better than most guides admit. The binding constraint is holding the phone still, not the sensor: night mode on an iPhone, astrophotography mode on a Pixel and Expert RAW on a Galaxy all extend the exposure once the phone stops moving, so a clamp on a tripod changes far more than a newer handset would. What white balance should I use for the aurora?

If you shoot RAW it is not a capture setting at all — it is metadata, fully reversible at home. That matters because the published advice conflicts: Capture the Atlas recommend around 3500 K and other guides give 3000 to 4200 K, while Iceland Photo Tours' Iceland-based author says leave it on auto and correct it later. Set 3500–4000 K if you want the rear screen to look honest at two in the morning. If you are shooting JPEG that setting is the photograph, so do not leave it on auto.

Should I turn off long-exposure noise reduction?

Yes, in these conditions. It takes a second matching dark frame after every exposure, doubling what each shot costs — a fifteen-second frame blocks the camera for thirty, and during an active display that is every second frame lost. Cold is the one thing about an Icelandic winter night working in your favour: the sensor never warms enough to generate much thermal noise, which is the problem the feature exists to solve. Turn it off, shoot more frames, denoise afterwards.

Can I photograph the aurora from inside the van?

Not usefully. Glass reflects the lit cabin back into the lens, a windscreen is curved and laminated so it degrades the stars, and the inside surface fogs as soon as anyone breathes near it. Open a side door and shoot from the step if you must.

How do I get a foreground into an aurora shot at night?

Scout it in daylight, which every serious guide advises and almost nobody does. BBC Sky at Night suggest reflections, rugged foregrounds and even people rather than sky alone, and a still surface doubles the display for free. Understand the limit: a two-second exposure will not lift a landscape lit by nothing, so the honest options are silhouettes, moonlight, or a separate longer frame for the land — and if you blend two frames, say so.

Is a time-lapse worth shooting?

On an active night, yes — it is the only format that shows what the aurora actually did, and it rescues a display too fast to photograph well as a still. Use one- to four-second frames with a short gap, run it from an intervalometer or the camera's own, and expect it to cost you: a few hundred frames at −8°C is most of a battery, and you cannot recompose while it runs. On a Pixel, astrophotography mode hands you one alongside the still for nothing.

Do I need a tripod, or will a rock do?

Anything rigid works as long as the camera cannot move, so a bean bag on the bonnet, the open door sill, a wall or a flat rock are all real options — on an active display you are shooting a second or two, and every one of those will hold that. Where they fail is the faint arc that wants fifteen seconds, and the moment you want a particular foreground: none of them lets you recompose, and none of them lets you point straight up. If you own a tripod the van has room for it; if you do not, park so that a solid surface faces the sky you want and accept that the frame has been chosen for you.
