Why Happy Campers Stands Out

Happy Campers' position in the market is best described as value-led and inclusion-heavy rather than ultra-cheap or luxury-first. The company deliberately offers both lower-cost EX vans and newer standard and 4x4 models, meaning it spans more of the market than companies that only do premium builds or bargain campers.

Based on fleet structure, included features, and traveler pricing discussions, Happy Campers looks strongest in the "pay a bit for less hassle" lane — not always the absolute cheapest in peak summer, but often a better-equipped and better-supported choice than a stripped-down low-end rental.

First-timer friendly

Real pickup walkthrough, trip-planning resources, and a booking portal designed for people who have never rented a campervan before.

More than a bed on wheels

Along with more common amenities like heating & bedding, Happy Campers also includes unlimited Wi-Fi on standard vans. They even have camping toilets you can rent. So If you are looking for an Iceland campervan with toilet, Happy Campers is a good choice.

Honest budget tier

EX vans are openly described as older, higher-mileage, and more worn — not a hidden downgrade disguised as a deal.

Real 4x4 range

4WD insulation, Webasto heating, and F-road compatibility for highlands and winter travel — meaningfully separate from the 2WD range.

Things to Know Before You Book

Pricing logic

Happy Campers uses dynamic pricing based on demand, season, and availability. Early-bird bookings made well in advance tend to get noticeably better rates. In practice, two trips in the same van can price very differently depending on month and lead time.

The base price includes CDW insurance, unlimited mileage, cooking equipment, bedding, and airport shuttle. Additional insurance tiers, Wi-Fi add-ons (for EX vans), and extras like camping chairs are priced separately.

Insurance & roadside risk

Every rental includes CDW and third-party liability, but the base self-risk is significant. Gravel damage is one of the most common claims in Iceland, and wind damage to van doors is only fully covered under the highest insurance tier. Under lower tiers, the self-risk remains high, and water and underbody damage are excluded.

Important caveat

The base CDW insurance is not the same thing as full protection — the base self-risk can be up to several thousand euros. You can choose or change insurance tiers during booking, via the portal, or at pickup.

What's included

This is one of Happy Campers' strongest selling points. All vans come with pillows and duvets for every passenger, gas stoves, pots, pans, plates, cutlery, utensils, cutting boards, and cleaning supplies. Standard vans get unlimited Wi-Fi; EX models can add it for a daily fee. Vehicle listings also mention basic CDW, airport shuttle, 24/7 emergency phone support, and seasonal winter kit items.

Pickup & return logistics

The free shuttle runs between Keflavik Airport, nearby hotels, and the office. Pickups happen during business hours. You'll need a physical driver's licence and a bank card in the primary renter's name at pickup — no digital copies. The pickup process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and includes paperwork, insurance review, and a full van walkthrough. Vans must be returned with a full tank and in reasonable condition.

The Fleet at a Glance

Happy Campers currently offers a broad range of vehicle categories. Most renters can think of them in four practical groups.

Solo travellers & couples on a budget

Happy 1 · Happy 1 EX Auto · Happy 1 EX

The entry point. Happy 1 is the newer standard 2-person van with free Wi-Fi; the EX Auto is an older automatic; and the EX is the cheapest manual option. Compact and fuel-efficient for Ring Road trips.

Couples who want more comfort

Happy 2 · Happy 2 EX

Seats and sleeps three, with an indoor dining table, storage, heating, and a more comfortable all-season setup. Happy 2 EX is the cheaper, more worn version.

Families & friend groups

Happy 3 · Happy 3 EX

Large 2WD vans sleeping up to five. Full kitchen, recent model year, genuinely family-oriented interior. The practical pick for group road trips without going to motorhome territory.

Highlands, winter & rough roads

Happy 4x4 · Happy 4x4 EX · Happy 4x4 XL

4WD with insulation, Webasto heating, and F-road compatibility for highlands and winter travel. The XL sleeps five. 4x4 EX gives you four-wheel drive at a lower price but with an older vehicle.

The fleet is overwhelmingly automatic transmission, with older EX models as the main manual exception.

What Reviewers Actually Say

4.8

Google · ~2,700 reviews

Overwhelmingly positive. Reviewers consistently praise staff warmth, smooth airport transfers, clean vans, and genuine Iceland-readiness. Complaints tend toward minor annoyances — bedding quality, occasional fridge glitches, and cosmetic wear on EX vans.

4.0

Trustpilot · ~160 reviews

More mixed and more useful for spotting what goes wrong. Negative patterns include shuttle/pickup delays, dirty or worn equipment, missing items, vehicle-condition issues, and disappointment with post-trip resolution when problems did arise.

Google highlights

The recurring positives are staff friendliness, smooth pickup and return, clear handoff explanations, and vans that feel clean, well-equipped, and genuinely ready for Iceland. Travelers repeatedly mention the free airport shuttle, unlimited mileage, and the amount of cooking and camping gear included as standard.

The 4x4 range gets particularly good marks from travelers doing highland routes, with the Webasto heating and insulation praised for cold-weather comfort.

Trustpilot patterns

Negative feedback clusters around a few themes: the EX (budget) vans showing their age with cosmetic wear, shuttle or pickup delays during busy periods, and surprise at the base insurance self-risk being higher than expected. Some travelers report that the smallest vans feel tighter than photos suggest.

Reddit takeaways

Reddit and travel forum advice is concrete: the smallest layouts can feel tight for two because the rear kitchen area narrows the bed; luggage space is tighter than photos suggest; and EX wear is usually cosmetic rather than trip-ending as long as you expected an older vehicle. The consensus is that Happy Campers is a reliable choice if you book the right tier for your expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance is included with Happy Campers?
Every rental includes CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and third-party liability insurance. However, the base self-risk is high. You can add Premium or Max insurance to reduce or eliminate the self-risk. Gravel, ash, and sand damage are common in Iceland, so consider your coverage carefully.
Can I drive F-roads with a Happy Campers van?
Only the 4x4 models (Happy 4x4, 4x4 EX, 4x4 XL) are permitted on F-roads. The 2WD vans are restricted to paved and gravel roads. F-roads typically open in late June and close in September, depending on conditions.
Is there a free airport shuttle from Keflavik?
Yes. Happy Campers operates a free shuttle between Keflavik Airport, nearby hotels, and their depot. The shuttle runs during business hours. You'll need to arrange timing when you book.
What cooking and camping gear comes with the van?
All vans include duvets, pillows, gas stove, pots, pans, plates, cutlery, utensils, cutting boards, dish soap, and cleaning supplies. Standard vans also include unlimited Wi-Fi. EX vans can add Wi-Fi for a daily fee.
