The short version
The distinction that matters is not the brand on the heater. It is whether the thing works with the engine off and nothing plugged in. A fuel-fired parking heater does, and so does a gas one. A 230 V electric heater does not — it needs a powered campsite pitch and is dead weight anywhere else. An electric camper heats from its drive battery, which works anywhere but spends the range you meant to drive. And a few campers rented in Iceland have no heater at all.
The running costs are smaller than people expect, and the constraint sits somewhere else entirely. A diesel parking heater burns one to two litres over a full night and pulls a modest amount from the leisure battery — the blower and the fuel pump, not the warmth. What ruins a night is a battery that went into it part-charged, which is why two Icelandic companies publish a minimum daily driving time alongside their heating claims.
Two things do real damage. Idling the engine for heat is dangerous, ineffective and against Icelandic regulation, and the mechanism that kills people is a snow-blocked exhaust rather than the cold. Condensation is the quieter one: two adults asleep put the better part of a litre of water into the cabin air, and in a cold metal box almost all of it lands on a surface you will sleep against tomorrow.
No rental listing on the Icelandic market tells you which of the four you are buying — several companies use the single word 'heater' for units that behave completely differently. That makes it a question to ask before booking rather than something to discover at the depot on a January afternoon.
The four things vendors call "heating"
Rent.is put the whole confusion into one sentence on their own FAQ: "all our campervans have heaters that can be used overnight. The heaters will use the auxiliary battery and diesel or depend on external campsite electricity." Both halves are true, and they describe two incompatible holidays. Go Campers' spec flags do the same thing — the same word, heater, for a unit that runs parked in a lay-by on the Snæfellsnes coast and for one that only runs on a powered pitch.
What separates them is architecture. A fuel-fired parking heater is a sealed-combustion appliance: it takes combustion air from outside the van, burns a trickle of the vehicle's own diesel, vents the exhaust outside and blows warm dry air into the cabin. It adds no water and no combustion products to the air you are breathing, and it needs nothing but fuel and a little electricity. That is why it is the right answer for Iceland, and why an unflued flame inside the cabin is the wrong one.

- A mains heater. It works when the camper is plugged into a powered campsite pitch and at no other time — no site, no heat, regardless of how cold it is or how much diesel is in the tank. Go Campers' Go SMART Manual and Lava Car Rental's Renault Kangoo are both in this state; Lava's own catalogue describes the Kangoo as having "an electric plug to get electricity and heating at campsites".
- EV cabin heat
- Heat drawn from the traction battery, so it works parked anywhere but costs range. CampEasy's two Tesla campers run Tesla's Camp Mode; the company states it drains about 10% of the drive battery overnight, and that plugging in at a campsite turns that into roughly a 15% gain instead.
- No heater at all
- A real category on this market, not a hypothetical. Go Campers' Go SMART Budget has none, and so do their summer-only Go 4x4 TOP and Go 4x4 Wrangler. Kuku Campers describe their A Campervan, a Dacia Dokker conversion, as "NO Heater" and sell it as a spring and summer vehicle.
Our own catalogue groups the first two together, because the question that decides your night is engine-off versus plugged-in, not diesel versus gas. Most of the campers we have transcribed are in that engine-off state. The exceptions are few enough to name individually, which is exactly why they are dangerous to ignore: the listing that sells you a hookup-only heater looks identical to the listing that sells you a Webasto.

The diesel number is the one that surprises people. A full night at maximum output is under two litres, and the thermostat cycles the burner rather than holding it flat out, so real consumption sits lower. Against a 60 to 90 litre van tank that is a rounding error, and it is why Icelandic operators are relaxed about customers running the heater all night.
The battery is the real limit, and not because the heater is greedy. Nine to nineteen amp-hours is comfortably inside a healthy leisure battery even derated for cold. The failure mode is a battery that started the night half empty. Go Campers state plainly that customers must drive at least two hours during the day to recharge the leisure battery enough for the night; Kuku publish roughly three hours' driving for about eight hours of heating on their E Campervan. A day spent parked in one place waiting out a storm — an entirely normal Icelandic winter day — breaks that assumption, and it breaks it on the night you least want it broken.
Treat published run times as claims rather than measurements. Go Campers advertise "over 8 hours of strong heat without needing to run the engine"; CampEasy advertise 8 to 10 hours of full heating without starting the engine or plugging in, backed by two extra AGM batteries in the rear. Neither states an outside temperature, a thermostat setting or a starting state of charge, and all three of those change the answer.
Gas arithmetic is less forgiving. A 10 kg propane bottle feeding a Truma Combi at its 4 kW setting gives about 31 hours of burner-on time, or about 62 at the 2 kW setting. Elapsed time is longer because the thermostat cycles — but in an Icelandic winter, in a vehicle that is not insulated like a house, the duty cycle climbs towards continuous. Plan on a bottle lasting two or three cold nights rather than a week, and know where you can exchange one before you need to.
A campsite hookup is more limited than it sounds. Icelandic pitches use the blue 16 A CEE connector on a 230 V supply, which is a hard ceiling of 3,680 watts. That runs one 2 kW fan heater with headroom and very little else; put a kettle on at the same time and expect the pitch breaker to go. The figure of "approximately 11 kW" that circulates in travel content is a three-phase number and does not describe a standard Icelandic pitch.
For an electric camper the cost is range rather than fuel, and cold charges twice. CampEasy's own 10% overnight figure is the cabin heat alone; the broader cold penalty is real too, with the 2026 Nordic El Prix test taking 24 electric cars down to −32 °C and measuring an average 38% below their WLTP range. Iceland's winter is far milder than that, so treat 38% as an upper bound rather than an expectation — but plan the day's driving on the assumption that the heater and the weather have taken a bite before you set off.
Why you must never idle the engine for warmth
The mechanism that kills people is specific and it is not exotic. Snow banks against the back of a parked vehicle, obstructs the exhaust, and the exhaust gas finds the cabin instead of the outside air. The US CDC documented a cluster of exactly this during the January 1996 blizzard in the north-east — three cases reported to Philadelphia poison control and twenty-two in New York City over 8 and 9 January — and puts unintentional carbon monoxide deaths not linked to fires at more than 400 a year nationally, with over 50,000 emergency department visits. There is no equivalent Icelandic series and we found no Icelandic case record, so those figures describe the mechanism rather than this country. What Iceland supplies in abundance is wind-driven spindrift, which banks against a stationary van quickly and silently.
It is also against the rules. Reglugerð nr. 788/1999, article 6, forbids leaving a vehicle running when it is left unattended, and forbids letting the engine of a stationary vehicle run "longer than a very brief moment" — örstutta stund — unless there is special reason. No number of minutes is specified. Enforcement sits with municipal health committees rather than the police, so in practice nobody is going to knock on your window at two in the morning. That is a reason to treat this as a rule about the air in your van, not a rule about being caught.
And it does not even work. Cabin heat stops when the engine stops, fuel burn is an order of magnitude above the parking heater's, and the entire reason a fuel-fired heater exists is to deliver heat with the engine off. If the camper you booked has one, you never need to turn the key. If it does not, the answer is bedding and a campsite, not the ignition.
One gap worth closing yourself: EN 50291-2:2019 is the European product standard for carbon monoxide alarms in caravans and motor caravans, adding vibration and movement testing that a domestic household alarm never faces. None of the Icelandic companies we checked states on its website that an alarm of any standard is fitted. That is not proof that none is — it is a question to put in an email, and a certified vehicle alarm weighs nothing in a suitcase.
Clear the exhaust and the intake before you sleep
Walk round the van before bed and make sure snow is not banked against the exhaust, the heater exhaust or the heater's air intake. CampEasy state that they modify their heater air intakes specifically for snowstorm conditions, which tells you how routinely Icelandic drifting snow blocks them. A heater that shuts down at 03:00 because its intake is buried is an unpleasant night; an engine left running with a buried tailpipe is something else.
Condensation: the litre of water you exhale
Measured moisture release from a person indoors at low activity runs 0.8 to 1.7 kg a day, roughly 30 to 70 grams an hour from respiration and skin combined. Two adults asleep for eight hours therefore put something like 0.6 to 1.1 litres of liquid water into the air of a cabin of four to six cubic metres. There is nowhere for it to go. It condenses on the coldest surfaces available — the glass, the metal ribs, the ceiling directly above your heads — and once the surface is below freezing it does not run down the window, it frosts onto it. At Akureyri, where the 1991–2020 mean daily minimum sits near −3.5 °C through the winter months, that is the ordinary outcome rather than the bad night.
By the second morning the water is in the bedding, and damp bedding is the actual reason people are cold in a van that has a working heater. This is the failure that gets blamed on the heater and is not the heater's fault.
The cooker is what turns a manageable problem into a soaked one. Burning propane produces about 1.63 kg of water vapour for every kilogram of gas — stoichiometry, not opinion. Use the hob to take the chill off a cabin and you are pouring more than a litre and a half of water per kilogram of gas into a space of a few cubic metres, on top of the carbon monoxide risk of an unflued flame in an enclosed space. Cook with a vent open, and never cook for warmth.
The fix is airflow, and the trade is better than it feels at the time. Running the heater a notch higher with a vent cracked open all night beats sealing the van and running it lower, because a cabin you have to dry out costs you more than the heat going through the vent.
Crack a roof vent before you sleep, not after you notice
A finger's width is enough, plus a window on the sheltered side if it is windy. Open it at bedtime and leave it open — ventilating in the morning is too late, the water has already condensed.
Get wet kit out of the sleeping space
Boots, waterproofs and towels go in the cab footwell or a sealed bag. Draped over the bed to dry, they simply move the water into the duvet.
Never use the hob as a heater
An unflued flame puts both water and combustion products into the cabin. If the van is cold and the heater is off, the answer is the heater or another layer.
Wipe the glass in the morning
Two minutes with a microfibre cloth stops last night's condensation becoming tonight's damp bedding, and it is the difference between night three being fine and night three being miserable.
Park nose into the wind where you can
It reduces the buffeting that keeps you awake, and it keeps drifting snow off the back of the van where the exhaust and heater outlets usually are.

One claim about Icelandic campers deserves killing outright: that the water system is drained and the van "winterised" for the season. Checked against the public FAQs, camper specs and winter-travel pages of Go Campers, CampEasy, Cozy Campers, Happy Campers, Kuku Campers, Rent.is and Iceland Camper Vans in August 2026, not one of them publishes a dated winterisation or drain policy at all. The version of the story that names March and April traces back to a Canadian operator, not an Icelandic one.
The structural reason is that most small Icelandic campervans have no plumbing to winterise. Water travels in removable containers you lift out and fill at a tap. There is nothing under the floor to burst, which is good news, and the failure you will actually meet is much more mundane: a container left in an unheated van and frozen solid by morning.
Where real plumbing does exist, the Icelandic answer is withdrawal rather than winterisation. Höldur (Hertz Iceland) rent their gas-heated motorhomes only between 1 April and 7 October. McRent withdraw most of their motorhome groups for the winter and keep a single group running. Cozy Campers close rentals entirely from 20 December to 31 January. This is why a camper's published rental window matters as much as its heater — a Webasto in a van you cannot book in January is not a winter option.
And some of the water that is off is not yours to control. Skaftafell, which stays open year-round in Vatnajökull National Park, states that because of frost risk water is not available at the outdoor sinks in winter and that frost-free conditions are generally only expected after mid-May. It is the only site we found that publishes this. It would be optimistic to assume it is the only one doing it.
Which heating state you actually need
You want to move most days and park where the view is, not where the socket is
Only a fuel-fired or gas parking heater does that. Everything else ties the night to a powered pitch or takes it out of your driving range, and in a season when the open campsite network is thin, that is a real constraint on the route.
You are booking December to February and will be on a powered campsite every night regardless
A 230 V heater is workable — but confirm that the sites on your route are actually open in your month, that the pitch has power, and that you are comfortable with the plan collapsing if one of them turns out not to be.
You are drawn to an electric camper
Accept that the night's warmth comes out of the range you planned to drive, plan the charging around that, and check the basics separately: CampEasy's Tesla Camper Y 4x4 has no internal cooking and no built-in running water, so it needs campsite facilities to work at all.
You are travelling in September or early October and staying south
An unheated or hookup-only camper is survivable with genuinely warm bedding. Note where the line is, though: November is the first month whose mean overnight minimum in Reykjavík sits below freezing, and the north gets there earlier.
Anyone in the party sleeps cold, or you are travelling with children
Take the parking heater. It is the single piece of equipment that changes how the whole trip feels, and no other saving on the booking is worth a run of bad nights.
A heater is not bedding, and most companies sell them separately
Go Campers supply "small cushions and thin fleece blankets" as standard and say themselves they are not recommended for sleeping; duvets are included only on the Go 4x4 LUX and are a paid extra on everything else. Kuku Campers include no bedding at all — no blankets, sleeping bags or pillows. Happy Campers recommend renting a sleeping bag for September to April. Cozy Campers are the counter-example, supplying goose-down duvets and pillows. Ask what is in the van before you assume the heater is the whole answer.

What to ask before you book
"Which kind of heater is it — fuel-fired, gas, 230 V or the drive battery?"
Do not ask whether the camper has heating. The answer is yes in all four states and it tells you nothing. Name the four and make them pick one.
"Does it run with the engine off and nothing plugged in?"
This is the single question that separates a van you can sleep in anywhere from one that is tethered to a powered pitch. Go Campers' own range spans all four states, which is why their fleet page is the clearest illustration of the gap.
"How much daily driving does your heating claim assume?"
Two companies publish a figure — two hours a day at Go Campers, roughly three at Kuku for about eight hours of heat. If yours does not publish one, get it in writing, because a storm day parked up is when you find out.
"What bedding is included, and what is it rated for?"
Fleece blankets and a heated van still make a cold night. Where a company quotes a temperature rating for a sleeping bag, ask whether that is the comfort, limit or extreme figure — no Icelandic vendor we checked states which, and they are very different products.
"Is this exact camper offered in the month I am travelling?"
Seasonal withdrawal is real and it is not symmetrical. Several 4x4 builds come off the books for winter, at least one Go Campers build is rented only in winter, and one company shuts entirely over the New Year.
"Is a carbon monoxide alarm fitted, and to what standard?"
None of the companies we checked mentions one on its website, which is not the same as none fitting one. EN 50291-2 is the vehicle standard; a domestic household alarm is not certified for use in a moving vehicle.
"Where do I exchange a gas bottle, and is the one in the van full?"
Only relevant if the heater runs on gas, and then it is the whole trip. Icelandic cylinder gas is propane, exchanged empty-for-full at hardware chains and some fuel stations, and a bottle that still lights the hob may not run the heater.
"What happens if the heater fails mid-trip?"
Get the replacement-vehicle and callout policy in writing before you pay. The insurance menu covers damage to the van, not a broken heater and not the nights you lose to it.
Frequently asked questions
Do all Icelandic campervans have heating?
No, and the gap is not hidden in the small print — Kuku Campers describe their Dacia Dokker-based A Campervan as having no heater and sell it as a spring and summer vehicle, and Go Campers' Go SMART Budget has none either. Go Campers also define winter as 1 October to 14 May and do not rent tent or rooftop campers at all during it. Between an unheated van and a fuel-fired one sit two intermediate states that both get called heating, so a yes to "is it heated" settles very little.
Is it safe to run a diesel parking heater all night while I sleep?
Yes, and that is what it is designed for. It is a sealed-combustion appliance: combustion air comes from outside the van and exhaust goes back outside, so nothing from the burn enters the cabin. The practical limits are electrical and mechanical rather than toxicological — a leisure battery that started the night part-charged, or an intake or exhaust that has drifted over with snow, which is worth checking before bed.
Can I run the heater while driving?
For a gas system, an Icelandic operator's own guidance is not to run the gas heating while driving and to close the bottle first. Diesel parking heaters carry no such instruction, but the engine's own heater is already doing the work once you are moving, so there is little reason to. The more useful habit while driving is the opposite one: put the driving hours in that the leisure battery needs to get through the night.
Does a campsite hookup let me run whatever heater I like?
No. Icelandic pitches supply 230 V through a 16 A blue CEE connector, which caps you at 3,680 watts — one 2 kW fan heater with room to spare, and not much alongside it. Run a kettle at the same time and expect the pitch breaker to trip. Outside Reykjavík the electricity is also usually billed separately from the pitch fee rather than included in it.
Will the rental company have drained the water system for winter?
Almost certainly not, because in most Icelandic campervans there is nothing to drain — water travels in removable containers rather than plumbed underfloor tanks. None of the seven Icelandic companies whose public pages we checked publishes a winterisation or drain policy of any kind. Large plumbed motorhomes are handled differently: the industry's answer there is to take them off the market for the winter rather than to winterise them in service.
Is an electric camper viable in an Icelandic winter?
It can be, with planning. Can I bring gas canisters from home?
It is usually the wrong plan for a winter trip. Butane and butane-heavy mixes stop vaporising as temperatures approach freezing — butane boils at −0.5 °C — so a canister that worked fine in September delivers nothing on a February night. Iceland's cylinder gas is propane, which vaporises at any temperature the country produces, and it is exchanged empty-for-full at hardware chains and some fuel forecourts. Confirm with the rental company that the fitting in the van matches whatever you plan to buy.
