Why KuKu Campers Stands Out

KuKu Campers has been in the Iceland campervan market longer than most of its competitors. Since 2012, the company has refined an offering that combines a playful, recognizable brand with genuinely detailed policy transparency. That combination is unusual — most operators are either budget-focused with thin documentation or premium-positioned with bundled packages. KuKu gives you the budget entry point and the fine print to go with it.

The real differentiator is the insurance structure. Where most competitors sell two or three insurance tiers as opaque packages, KuKu breaks protection into individually priced components — CDW, SCDW, Platinum CDW, gravel, sand-and-ash, tire, and wind-damage cover are all separately available. That makes KuKu one of the easier brands for renters who want to build their own risk package rather than buy a single all-or-nothing upgrade.

A la carte insurance

CDW is included with a 3,000 EUR liability. SCDW drops that to 750 EUR for 20 EUR/day. Platinum CDW drops it to 0 EUR for 30 EUR/day. Gravel, sand-and-ash, tire, and wind-damage covers are all separately priced, plus Golden and Platinum bundles are available for those who prefer a single package.

Strong 4x4 and F-road detail

KuKu publishes detailed F-road rules per vehicle category. 4x4 models are cleared for specific highland roads, with explicit exclusions for harder routes like F-88, F-210, and F-249. River crossings are allowed on some 4x4 categories, though river-crossing damage is not covered.

Free mileage

Unlimited mileage is explicitly included with every rental — no hidden per-kilometer charges regardless of how far you drive.

Local operator since 2012

One of the oldest recognizable campervan specialists in Iceland, with over a decade of experience running from the Keflavik Airport area.

Things to Know Before You Book

Insurance and risk exposure

KuKu's insurance transparency is its strongest policy feature. CDW is included with every rental but carries a 3,000 EUR liability. SCDW at 20 EUR/day reduces that to 750 EUR. Platinum CDW at 30 EUR/day reduces it to zero. On top of these tiers, gravel protection, sand-and-ash cover, tire cover, and wind-damage cover are each sold separately. Golden and Platinum bundles wrap several of these into a single daily rate.

This a la carte approach is genuinely useful if you understand what you need. A summer Ring Road trip might warrant gravel protection but skip wind cover; a highland trip in shoulder season might need the full Platinum bundle. The key is reading the individual cover descriptions before pickup rather than defaulting to the cheapest option.

Important caveat

The base CDW insurance is not full protection — the 3,000 EUR self-risk is significant. Gravel damage is one of the most common claims in Iceland. Read the individual cover options and decide before you arrive rather than sorting it out under pressure at the counter.

F-road rules and restrictions

KuKu's F-road policy is more detailed than most competitors and worth reading carefully. Lower vehicle categories are not insured on certain gravel sections. 4x4 categories are cleared for many highland roads but explicitly excluded from some of the harder routes including F-88, F-210, and F-249. River crossings are permitted on some 4x4 categories, but damage from river crossings is not covered under any insurance tier.

If your itinerary includes specific F-roads, check KuKu's road-permission list for your vehicle category before booking. Getting this wrong could leave you uninsured on a road you planned to drive.

Booking and cancellation

Payment is normally full at booking, but KuKu offers the option of a reduced 25% minimum deposit if requested. Cancellation carries a 100 EUR processing fee, and no refund is available within 48 hours of pickup. That cancellation policy is tighter than some competitors who offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup.

Pickup and return logistics

The office is at Klettatrod 19 in Reykjanesbaer, near Keflavik Airport, with a free shuttle service. Office hours are 08:00 to 18:00 daily. There is no Reykjavik pickup option, so if you plan to start your trip from the city, factor in the transfer time from KEF.

The Fleet at a Glance

KuKu organizes its fleet into categories A through I plus a dedicated 4x4 segment. The official site does not publish an exact vehicle count, but the category spread is one of the widest among local operators.

Tightest budget

KuKu Economy Van

The cheapest way to do a campervan trip in Iceland. Older vehicles with basic sleeping and cooking setup. Functional and safe, but expect wear and minimal insulation.

Balanced value

KuKu Standard Van

A meaningful step up from economy: newer vehicle, better condition, more comfortable sleeping, and improved kitchen setup. The sweet spot for most budget-conscious travelers.

Comfort on a budget

KuKu Premium Van

The newest vehicles in the KuKu fleet with better insulation, more amenities, and a more comfortable overall experience. Still priced below most competitors' standard offerings.

Highlands, F-roads & rough terrain

KuKu 4x4 Van

Four-wheel drive for F-roads and highland routes. Cleared for most highland roads with explicit per-route restrictions. Required if your itinerary includes interior Iceland, but read the road-permission list for your specific category before booking.

KuKu does not publish current live pricing in accessible HTML. Seasonal rates are gated behind the booking engine, so direct pre-booking price comparison with other vendors requires requesting a quote.

What Reviewers Actually Say

4.8

Google · Self-reported on official site

The official homepage displays a 4.8/5 rating from Google reviews. This is a strong signal, though the review count was not independently captured in research, so the figure comes from KuKu's own site rather than a direct third-party page.

4.8

Facebook · Self-reported on official site

Also displayed at 4.8/5 on the official homepage. Like the Google score, this was surfaced by KuKu's own site rather than independently verified from the Facebook platform directly.

What the self-reported scores suggest

The 4.8/5 signals on both Google and Facebook are directionally positive and suggest a generally well-regarded operation. However, because these scores were surfaced from KuKu's own homepage rather than independently captured on third-party review platforms, they should be treated as useful but less independently validated than competitors whose Trustpilot pages were directly verified.

Common themes from research

KuKu is recognized as a budget-friendly local operator with strong 4x4 know-how and one of the most explicit insurance menus in the market. The playful brand identity and colorful van designs are frequently mentioned. The recurring positive theme is value for money with clear policy transparency.

Where independent review depth is thinner

A separate parseable Trustpilot page was not surfaced during the research pass, which means the customer-feedback picture is positive but less independently validated than operators like CampEasy, Cozy Campers, Go Campers, or Rent.is who had directly captured Trustpilot scores. This is a research limitation, not necessarily a quality judgment.
